Group A · agent required

A Taobao spreadsheet is a list of IDs. It is not a shop.

Taobao has the deepest catalogue of any Chinese marketplace and no way to reach you directly. Everything in a Taobao sheet is a product ID waiting to be routed through somebody else.

TL;DR

A Taobao spreadsheet holds item IDs from item.taobao.com. Taobao itself does not ship internationally in any usable way, so each link must be converted to a buying agent before it becomes an order. That conversion is mechanical and free — the ID is the same at every agent.

What is actually in the file

Open any Taobao spreadsheet and the operative column is a set of URLs shaped item.taobao.com/item.htm?id= followed by eleven or twelve digits. Those digits are the whole payload. Everything else in the row — the photo, the price, the seller note — is annotation.

The ID belongs to the seller's listing, not to any agent. This is why the same find appears in one sheet as a CNFans link and in another as a raw Taobao link: both wrap the identical number.

Why Taobao specifically needs an agent

Taobao is domestic infrastructure. Sellers price for domestic delivery, accept domestic payment rails, and in most cases will not ship outside mainland China at all. Nothing about that is a policy against foreigners; it is simply what the platform was built for.

The agent exists to bridge exactly that gap: they hold a Chinese account and address, buy on your behalf, receive the parcel, and forward it. Three functions, one fee — and six of the eight agents with verified rates charge nothing visible for it, recovering the margin on the exchange rate and the freight quote instead.

Verdict: a Taobao spreadsheet is unusable on its own. It becomes usable the moment each ID is rebuilt against a trading agent, which the converter does for eighteen of them in one paste.

Taobao versus Weidian versus 1688, in one line each

All three need an agent, and people mix them up constantly because the sheets look identical.

The three agent-required Chinese marketplaces and how their links differ.
PlatformURL parameterTypical sellerBest for
Taobaoid=Established storefronts, ratings, dispute systemBreadth — the deepest catalogue of the three
WeidianitemID=Small independent sellers, often WeChat-firstRep-specific stock that never lists on Taobao
1688offer/ in the pathFactories and wholesalers, minimum quantitiesBuying five or more of the same thing

The parameter names matter because hand-editing a Taobao link into a Weidian slot produces a URL that looks right and resolves to nothing.

How to read a sheet before you spend anything

  1. Check the link is live before converting. Listings get pulled; a dead ID converts perfectly into eighteen dead links.
  2. Check the date on the sheet. Prices drift and sellers close. A 2023 Taobao sheet is a starting point, not a price list.
  3. Ignore the agent in the link. Whoever built the sheet picked their own agent. That is not a recommendation, it is a default.
  4. Watch for PandaBuy and WeGoBuy links. Both agents are closed — see the recovery page. The IDs inside still work.

Tmall is Taobao, with one difference

Plenty of sheet rows point at detail.tmall.com rather than item.taobao.com, and people assume it needs different handling. It does not — the converter treats both identically, because the ID space is shared and every agent accepts either.

The difference is who is allowed to sell. Tmall storefronts are operated by registered businesses or authorised distributors, with a deposit lodged against the account, whereas anyone can list on Taobao. That raises the floor on accountability and raises prices with it. For genuine brand goods Tmall is the safer half of the same platform; for the things people build spreadsheets around, Tmall storefronts largely do not carry them.

Reading the seller, not just the item

Taobao is the only one of the three agent platforms with a mature reputation system, and spreadsheets throw that information away by reducing a listing to a link. It is worth opening the storefront before converting anything.

Three signals carry most of the weight. The first is the shop's rating tier, displayed as a run of hearts, diamonds or crowns — the scale escalates with cumulative transactions, so a crown-tier store has processed orders in the hundreds of thousands. The second is the trio of scores Taobao shows against every shop: description accuracy, service, and dispatch speed, each rated against the category average and colour-coded green or red. Description accuracy is the one that matters here, because it measures precisely the gap that hurts you — the difference between the listing photos and what turns up.

The third is the review tab with the buyer-photo filter applied. Listing images are supplied by the seller and are routinely the retail product rather than what ships. Buyer photographs are not, and on a high-volume listing their absence is itself a signal.

Worth knowing: a red score against description accuracy is the single most predictive warning available before you spend anything, and it takes ten seconds to check. Spreadsheets never carry it, because the person who built the sheet already bought successfully and had no reason to look.

None of this replaces the QC stage — it just means fewer items reach it in a state you would reject.

The part sheets never tell you

A Taobao spreadsheet lists the goods price and stops there, which is why first orders come in over budget so reliably. The item is the smallest of four costs: after it come the agent's exchange rate spread, international freight, and import charges at your border. On a single low-value item, freight alone routinely exceeds the goods.

Run the parcel through the shipping calculator with box dimensions before you commit — volumetric weight, not the scale, is what gets billed on anything bulky.

RepBuyTools — built and maintained by a sourcing team that has been shipping parcels out of Guangdong since 2019. Every figure on this site is either measured from real parcels, taken from a named third-party source, or labelled as an estimate. We are not a buying agent and earn nothing when you pick one.

The questions that come up every time

What is a Taobao spreadsheet?

A shared list of Taobao product links, usually organised by brand or category. The useful content of each row is the numeric item ID; the rest is annotation.

Can I buy from Taobao without an agent?

Not practically. Taobao sellers price and ship for domestic mainland delivery and most will not send abroad. An agent holds a Chinese address on your behalf, buys, receives, and forwards.

Does it matter which agent a spreadsheet link points at?

No. The agent in the link is whoever built the sheet, not a recommendation. Paste it into the converter and the underlying ID is rebuilt for eighteen agents.

Why do Taobao and Weidian links look different?

Taobao uses id=, Weidian uses itemID=, and 1688 puts the number in the path after offer/. They are separate platforms with separate ID spaces, so the numbers are not interchangeable.

Is a Taobao spreadsheet from 2023 still usable?

Partly. Staple items and standard colourways survive for years; seasonal and hyped items get delisted. Verify each link loads before converting rather than converting the whole sheet blind.
